Chaos in SEO

I put up a recent post with this title - I think SEO shares some characteristics with Chaos Theory, and have provided, um, a practical test...

It's addictive. Also, I need an SEO to beat the filthy PPC merchant, and post it :)

I think SEO shares more

characteristics with Complexity Theory than Chaos Theory.

John : You're welcome

John : You're welcome :D

qwerty: Hilarious. YouTube has some fine examples

Silver : I see what you're saying, but I disagree. Creating an SE index would fall into that category of problem - approaching an "ideal" index from a morass of wild data isn't quite an np-complete problem, but its a toughie.

SEO is not after a perfect solution, but simply a "good enough" one. You're up against several others in mutual competition, not only with each other, but also with "the rules", which can "and do" change on a regular basis. You have a finite number of variables you can change, but predicting their outcome isimpossible, since not only does your outcome inter-relate to everyone elses, but the overall outcome is influenced by the basic rules, which are unknown.

Since you end up with an iterative, unpredictable system, I see it more as a chaotic system, than a complex one. Someone with a deeper understanding of the maths please correct me if I'm wrong, but complexity theory is more to do with the efficient exploration of the solution space of a given problem
