Hunter S Thompson Moves On

Hunter S Thompson Moves On
Link is to BBC Obit.
Hunter S Thompson, who has committed suicide aged 67, was an unflinching and acerbic chronicler of US counterculture.
A leading political journalist, he was also considered one of the most important US authors of the 20th century.
Known for his cutting and explosive writing style, Thompson's renegade reporter attitude was a revelation in 1960s America.

I swear i did not know!
I just went to check my email and found Rich Ord had asked me for permission to repost selected threadwatch threads at WPN (along with zawodny, rubel,et al) lol!
So, should i do it? I like Rich, but that's no basis for a decision like this. I guess what im asking is if this is a good move for Threadwatch or not, and what the implications, if any, are.
Paris Hilton's Address Book Hacked

T-Mobile Hack Leaks Celebrity Numbers
I've been avoiding this story all day becuase Paris Hilton just winds me up - i finally gave in and clicked the Beta News story though, and it's kinda funny:
Hotel heiress Paris Hilton has had her privacy violated yet again. Over the weekend, details of Miss Hilton's private life, personal photos and the phone numbers of A-List celebrities circulated in droves throughout the Web after a hacker gained unauthorized access to the mobile maven's T-Mobile Sidekick II.
Hilton's address book is a paparazzi's dream come true: Rapper Eminem, actress Lindsay Lohan, Pharrel, Usher, Fred Durst, Usher, Christina Aguilera, Vin Diesel, and Anna Kournikova are just a handful of the stars that had their private telephone numbers and e-mail addresses exposed by the leak of Hilton's electronic black book.
In what may be a case of deja vu all over again, personal photos taken by Hilton with her Sidekick are now flooding the Web.
They say "flooding the web" but i've not seen them?
Morons call "Global blogger action day"
- By: cornwall - 21st Feb 2005
NB: Nick W changed the title :)
The global web blog community is being called into action to lend support to two imprisoned Iranian bloggers.
This BBC report reports
The month-old Committee to Protect Bloggers' is asking those with blogs to dedicate their sites on 22 February to the "Free Mojtaba and Arash Day".
Arash Sigarchi and Mojtaba Saminejad are both in prison in Iran... Iranian authorities have been clamping down on prominent sites for some time.
and the spin is from
The Committee to Protect Bloggers was started by US blogger Curt Hopkins and counts fired flight attendant blogger Ellen Simonetti as a deputy director.
The odd thing about this article is that there is a lot about "The Committee to Protect Bloggers" but little about the whys and wherefores of the two guys reported to be in prison.
In the end I draw the conclusion that its more about promoting the said committee than trying to free the imprisoned bloggers.
Hard days...
- By: Nick W - 20th Feb 2005
It's been a tough day today - i've had a very tired (crochety) friend on my hands all day - one of those situations where it doesn't matter what you say, you're in trouble. All of you know this situation right? It's where you dread answering even the simplest question in case you give some opening to argument...
Once upon a time I would have dealt with this by (figuratively speaking) brute strength, and argued right back, but more fiercely and more ferociosly, but these days im more inclined to try to kill the problem by solving the issue...
What the hell do you do when you don't know what the bloody issue is?
What does the internet mean to you?
- By: Nick W - 20th Feb 2005
Some weeks back, a friend asked me this question in IM - I had to ask exactly what he meant before answering: How do you visualize the internet? What do you see it as?
He told me of a few folks he's asked the same question: Answers varied, and some were truly amazing. So, now, i want to ask you, 'cos i think it will be fun :)
How i see the net
I don't visualize well, in fact, i find it very hard to visualize anything - i have very poor sight so maybe that's why. However, i feel the internet.
To me, it feels like the universe looks: Millions of stars, all connected. Isolated, loosely conneced, clusters, hubs of activity - the universe....
Come on, it's Monday tomorrow, tell us how you "see" the net?
Quiet out there isn't it....
- By: Nick W - 19th Feb 2005
Well, another weekend with only the hardcore online :)
I've been busy with the redesign today again, wanna see the progress so far? NB: It is NOT complete - but i would appreciate opinions on the direction im headed with it...
In other news...
Bailey had an operation to put in a new ligament in her leg on wednesday. She is expected to make a 100% recovery, but must be on the lead for 6 weeks! - Sheesh, she's half lab half boxer and only 2 and half so you can imagine what she thinks about walking on the lead whilst Sam runs around having fun!
Still, it's not dampened her spirits. Wearing one of those awful collor/hoods to stop her biting out the stitches, and hopping around on 3 legs she's still running to get her toys and wanting to fight sam... Poor girl.
Tell us what you're up to...
You know the drill, talk about whatever you want. Bore the arse off the rest of the Threadwatch boys and girls and tell us what you've been up to this weekend, or what news you have from the week. It's not as if anything else is happening out there ;-)

Call centre users 'lose patience'
- By: cornwall - 18th Feb 2005
One of the things that really drives me up the walls is a call centre
"...the next available representative will be with you shortly..."
A BBC article shows, surprise that we do not like call centres and are becoming more petulant when we have to use them
Customers trying to get through to call centres are getting impatient and quicker to hang up, a survey suggests.
call centres also saw a sharp increase of customers simply abandoning calls, she says, from just over 5% in 2003 to a record 13.3% during last year.
call centres have a high "churn rate", with nearly a quarter of workers throwing in the towel every year, which in turn forces companies to pay for training new staff.
There are "no big differences in wait time and call resolution" between call centres based in Europe or North America and those in developing countries around the world.
Chavs are the root of all SPAM
- By: JasonD - 18th Feb 2005
Would you like a real fake Burberry Rolex sir?
Spamfo the anti spam blog, and others such as Netimperitive have an interesting take on spam, of the email kind.
They are reporting on Lycos' findings that
The top five chav-related brands filtered in Lycos's spam software are:
1 Rolex
2 Gucci
3 Chanel
4 Dior
5 Vuitton
It could well be said that the same could be said for Link spam. I was satirical about it previously but the Chav demographic is close to the perfect audience.

How to clean your mouse.... (This actually works pretty well)
To recalibrate your mouse, click and hold on the S. Then drag the S toward the K. If it doesn't work, you might want to clean your mouse.
Stop fucking about and do some work

Preeching to the Choir
- By: Nick W - 15th Feb 2005
Ok, this has been bugging me for weeks now. What is it with this sudden trend amongst SEO's to post prolifically in forums about IR (information retrieval) - im not talking about discussing how to get better PR, or whether that actually matters. Im not talking about discussing whether a certain technique works or not, and im not talking about general speculation on what may or may not be playing out in Search algorithms.
What i am talking about is
- Calculating PR to 13,344 decimal places
- Posting purely to link to huge amounts of theoretical papers on algorithms
- would Dr Numpty's WTF algorithm combined with Prof. Strumpets OMGYW thesis of time traveling turdburgers improve a pages temporal distortion in the causality of the Search time continuinuinuiniunum thus allow us to make bigger tits of ourselves?
er.. got a bit carried away on that last one heh..
You must know what i mean though right? This just seems to me to be preaching to the choir, yeah yeah, it's all very interesting "Mr im so gutted im not a phd" but how exactly is this helping you rank your sites?
I just know someone will say, "to understand future algos you need to look at what may come" - yeah yeah, clearly, however this self trumpeting phenomenomom goes way further than that and if, as i suspect, it's goal is to make everyone else on the forum think your real clever, it's not working with me.
It makes me think your a prat.
Sunday Silly - Dougie vs ALL of SEW
- By: Nick W - 13th Feb 2005
Rotating links....dontcha love them?
I can't find anything even remotely likable about the guy that started this thread, glengara but maybe i just did: He does know how to cause trouble and on a slow Sunday night a little forum fighting is always fun :)
I've linked to page 3 of this thread as it's where all the fun is, and if SEW have any sense, where it'll most likely end heh..
ihelpyou, aka Doug Heil is up to his usual tricks, no surprise there. General statements on the subject of what Doug thinks Spam is (everything except what doug does apparently) in the white hat supremacists fashion, but things take a turn for the worst for young dougie boy when Gurtie delivers a swift kick in the nuts he'll find it hard to recover from:
As Doug points out, things move on, what SE's find acceptable changes, people who used to promote rotating links no longer do; the 'best' way to SEO evolves.
LoL! It's a shame doug has put the archive.org bot on robots.txt as that site used to bring up a cracking page from 1999 :)
Fun and games, almost makes me wanna go join the fun but after Gurtie hamstrung my good mate doug it'd just be too easy...
When is foo not foo? - when I say so

For those with nothing better to do, and who have a sense of humour, have a look at his thread at WMW (assuming you have not been banned and do not have anon proxy)
Started by Mivox with the complaint
You lock a recipe thread, while at the same time you've got thread about what to properly call ice hockey still open? Sports are somehow more tech-related than cooking?
after a recipe for rabbit was locked on the grounds
Guys, I don't think we want to get back in the recipe dumps of 2002 when when had dozens of food and recipe threads ;-)Foo is for the tech related ;-)
Mivox lists 10 threads from the last 10 days at WMW that have not been cut including one on Startrek by BT himself.
A discussion follows. Mivox
if you want members to think of you as a fair and reasonable "authority figure," rules need to either be applied consistently, or they need to be changed to reflect actual practice.
A post from BT tries to justify his moce. But Woz is not convinced
Big mistake BT. Big, Huge.
Good stuff, if you want a little light foo!
