Yahoo Snag Russell Beattie
- By: Nick W - 19th Nov 2004
My first thoughts? Every Yahoo employee needs a free (or heavily subsidized) color mobile phone with unlimited internet connectivity. Yahoo would never dream of employing people and not giving them a PC with access to the internet right? Even if their job was only marginally related to being online, I'm sure the company wants their employees to be familiar with Yahoo's products and services, right? I mean, they even provide internet access kiosks in the hallways for visitors. Well, the mobile phone is the same way. Corporations need to start looking at mobiles not as a private devices or a cost-center, but as a new way to do business. Want to have the best mobile services on the planet? Get a few thousand of your own employees using mobile data on a daily basis and see what happens!
and from Zawodny:
I couldn't be more happy about this. If you don't already know, Russell is one of those folks who really, really, really seems to get this mobile stuff. He's so far ahead of almost everyone else (especially me) that I just take most of what says on my faith in his vision
I didnt know who this fella was a few weeks back but i've been reading his blog alot, and learning alot about the mobile web
Well done Russell...
BBC World Service via RSS!
- By: Nick W - 19th Nov 2004
From Ian Forresters blog:
I kid you not this is a huge project, to syndicate in over 30 different languages on one site is a worlds first and shows how creative the BBC is as an Corporation. I cant say too much about the future stages of content syndication but other formats are being considered and other options are also being considered. But at this stage all new indexes on the BBC worldservice language sites should be publishing rss. And they should be linked in the html files, using simple feed discovery.
Here's a couple of feeds you might like to get started with:
Now that is cool :-)
Internet Porn is Worse than Crack
- By: Nick W - 19th Nov 2004
Internet pornography is the new crack cocaine, leading to addiction, misogyny, pedophilia, boob jobs and erectile dysfunction, according to clinicians and researchers testifying before a Senate committee Thursday.Witnesses before the Senate Commerce Committee's Science, Technology and Space Subcommittee spared no superlative in their description of the negative effects of pornography.
Sounds a bit alarmist to me. Maybe i just have a resilient nature as i manage to only visit a few well chosen sites a couple of times a week :-)

Attitudes to TW
- By: Nick W - 18th Nov 2004
Apparently Im a Machine...
Peter points out some of the good stuff we've covered. It's kind of interesting to observe who likes to link to TW and who doesnt.
There are a few dicernable patterns out there with regard to TW opinion, could be just my over active and admittedly sometimes paranoid imagination though so i'll not expand on that :)
My favorite open opinion was doug heil in a thread that got deleted (not cos of this) over at SEW: "That place if full of BS!" ~ Doug - that's not the exact wording, but its not far off :-)
Have fun at that food and wine thing Peter, sounds cool!
2005 - Year of the Blog Buyout?
- By: Nick W - 18th Nov 2004
And if it doesnt, i'd be shocked i reckon, funny thing about blogs though is that this stuff has been available for years.. whenever you ask someone what makes blogging different they always say speed of publishing, publishing to different categories, syndication tools but that's all old hat really. I've been syndicating for god knows how long and CMS systems allow for rapid publication just as well as a blog -> look at this place..
the big thing is that blogs lower the bar is all, non-techies can get to grip with it much quicker..
Wired: Web Media Buyouts Coming? Kinda
Dont worry about that link so much though, paidcontent's paragraph is more interesting I think...
Maybe 2005 will be the year when bigger blogs get bought out by bigger media companies. I've been looking at more than a few strategic options (does not include buyout) for a year now, but bootstrapping seems to be going well for me so far ...
Anyway, the media-hack-who-hardly-know-about-media quotes Sam Whitmore, who believes that established media brands will have no choice but to adopt blog strategies -- and acquisitions will be a part of it. He predicts that by this time next year, Nick Denton, founder of Gawker and Wonkette, or Jason Calacanis, who co-founded micropublisher Weblogs, will have sold a couple of their blogs.

The Dirty Little Secrets of SEO & How Information Travels
- By: Nick W - 15th Nov 2004
I was browsing the new posts list of one of the busier seo forums this morning when a title caught my eye. The poster was asking if it were true that a certain technique/tactic got results.
It was true, but it's also one of the dirtier, more tightly held secrets out there at the moment and until then, as far as I know, had not been exposed to the masses. So im in a dillema: Do i go straight to Threadwatch and post it as the grade A information it was or...

Search Marketing Scams - Cashing in on Ignorance
- By: Nick W - 12th Nov 2004
Over the last week i've happened across three different search marketing scams. Two of them are disturbingly similar - so similar in fact that one would be forgiven for thinking they were written by the same person.
Is this the start of a Search Scam Gold Rush? I think perhaps it is. As Google and others begin to reach out to agencies and the hitherto little touched areas of search results come under increasing public notice it seems that some unwholesome search marketers are looking to cash in on ignorance. Follow the title link above for the full post.

Time Bomb Attacks may be the next big web hazard:
"Many forms of code injection targeted at web-based applications (for instance cross-site scripting and SQL injection) rely upon the instantaneous execution of the embedded code to carry out the attack. [But] in some cases it may be possible for an attacker to inject their malicious code into a data storage area that may be executed at a later date or time". These "second-order code injection attack" involve injecting malicious code into applications where it is later retrieved, rendered and executed by the victim

Little Bloggers Konfabulate over FireFox Scare Tactics
- By: Nick W - 9th Nov 2004
Charlene Li Interviewed on Corporate Blogging
MarketWatch Piece by Frank Barnako intreviewing Forresters Charlene Li:
I think that blogging is going to take off, partly because more and more people are interested. But more than anything else, it is going to get a lot easier to read blogs thru RSS technology. These are feeds put together to push a blog's content to a person's desktop. There is one company which is going to make a huge different in this, and that is Yahoo. Even though Yahoo doesn't have blogs, they have been a leader in integrating RSS feeds into My Yahoo. Now anybody who has a blog can have that appear on someone's My Yahoo. That really is customized media.
It's Only Spam if You're a Little Guy...
landing pages from optimost - I know it's stretching the definition a bit but it does royally piss me off that if i was talking about landing pages out on the forums then i'd get shouted down as a spammer. If a big company does it, it's market research....

An Experiment in Natural LInking vs SEO
- By: Nick W - 8th Nov 2004
As SEO's we think about links almost contantly. It's impossible to move on the seo fora and blog circuit without seeing a dozen or more posts or threads about something related to linking. As a natural result of operating in a link driven search landscape we may actually forget what a natural link looks like. Follow the link above for the full blog post.
