What a Slashdotting Looks Like
- By: claus - 16th Mar 2005

Got slashdotted yesterday, as you might know. Server didn't have any problems but i burned around 1,5 Gig of bandwith in one day on an otherwise low-traffic site. The automatic bandwith limit cut me off quite quickly, so my host added some more.
Here's what it looked like in bandwith terms - don't bother looking at the hours as i don't really know which timezone they belong to.
It looks like bandwith was cut twice. The first time, i had exceeded my quota by 50% so my host tripled the quota and promised to keep an eye on it. I guess the triple wasn't enough, as later i went out for lunch and it seems i met the tripled quota as well and the host raised it yet again.
Observation 1: Slashdotting hits instantly at peak - no build up, so there's no time for taking precautions
Observation 2: A good hosts is a good thing to have.
The full story about Google and highjacks
- By: claus - 9th Mar 2005
Some odd WembmasterWorld member with a nickname like mine has posted the full story about what really happens when Googlebot meets one of those 302 redirect scripts. It's sort of technical, but in a non-technical way.
Thought you might be interested: The full story of Google and 302s (see msg #54)
---
The thread is related to another current one, Lost in Google, and both - as well as other threads (including this one with people actually using 302's) - have a lot of members urging Google to fix this problem
This has been a hot topic for a while now. It's not exactly a new one, though, as you can see from post #8 here. The latter has also been mentioned on kuro5hin lately (thanks kpaul :-). Now, whaddayaknow... i even found a related threadwatch thread, so i gues that it is really important after all.
Site Monetization
- By: claus - 4th Mar 2005
In follow up to my first post Nick W got me thinking about monetization ideas for a thing like this. He even gave a link to a thread/post/whatchamacallit that's unfortunately closed by now.
Well, i've got a few, actually. Ideas, that is. I'll just post them here, and hence i'll be giving away several thousands of bucks woth of advice for free for everyone to peruse at will. No backlink or anything required, just grab it and do it ;)

Group Blogging - i think i get it now
- By: claus - 3rd Mar 2005
I'm still pretty amazed that i had not thought about this thing before, ie. a group blog. I've been looking for a "forum/blog/cms-like-thing-that-wasn't-quite-a-forum/blog/cms" for a good while, and this site is so much like the thing i was looking for.
